Summer School

New Haven School District Families,

A number of documents have been published and shared recently that reference possible strategies schools may choose to implement as they move to re-enter and reopen.  While this information is helpful and highlights issues to consider, it has also caused some concern among the public, especially in regard to the process of “having school”.

These documents were provided to schools as an example of a health protocol they could adopt and set as guidelines in re-entry decision making.  These standards are not required by law and are evolving as new information and recommendations come from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  Implementing every measure contained in the current documents would radically change the nature and experience of school.  At this point in time, Missouri is just beginning to re-open.  The next few weeks will provide significant insight into the future of the COVID-19 issue, and will also help us understand which protocols are the most effective and appropriate.

We would encourage everyone to remain patient and attentive as we continue to deal with new developments in the COVID-19 situation, but we also understand that several things may be of concern, and hope to address these below.

Summer school is being planned for later in the summer.  The current plan is to hold summer school from July 1st through July 31st. We would like to begin the enrollment process soon, keeping in mind that our plan may be changed by a final decision made at a later date with the assistance of state and local officials. As the re-opening of the state continues, we will cooperate with health officials on strategies that are best for our county and state.

Also, at this time, no sports schedules, programs, or other student activities have been canceled or modified for the 2020-2021 school year.  Everything is still scheduled to take place as originally planned.

The regular school year is scheduled to start on August 24. Bus routes are expected to run, although modifications will be considered, and parents can certainly choose to bring students to school instead of using bus transportation.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue to establish specific COVID-19 protocols to keep students as safe as possible.  Those protocols are determined through consultation with local and state health officials and in accordance with guidelines as they are evolving. We will provide press releases, social media posts, and other information related to COVID-19 protocols and developments as they become available. Please watch our school website, newhavenschools.org, for updates as well as your email and Twitter.

Sincerely,

Dr. Josh Hoener

Superintendent
